Individuals who experienced abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced renewed hope after their first encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, commented that the Pope's decision to meet with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to addressing the issue.

Global Strict Policy Pushed

The group is pushing for a global strict approach that would permanently remove any priest who admits to or is proven of abusing a minor. This approach has already been adopted in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the world" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is resistance," Hickey remarked.

Inherited Challenge

The new Pope, who assumed the role in spring, has taken on this longstanding problem that has plagued the Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the situation included an historic meeting on child abuse within the Church and changes to church laws to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Personal Link

For the representative, who prefers they/them pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the policy is deeply meaningful. The Canadian advocate revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was later transferred between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we aim to work with him," Hickey expressed. "We have the common objective, we want to end abuse by religious officials."

Historic Encounter

Seven representatives of the organization, which represents survivors and advocates from over thirty nations, met with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The discussion, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was described as "quite empathetic" when hearing the story of a female survivor victimized at a Catholic residential school for Indigenous children in Canada.

Hickey added the Pope was "compassionate" about their personal experience and seemed "very humble, humorous, and approachable."

"Survivors have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't feel like he was making empty promises," Hickey commented. "I believed like he was genuine, realistic, and very open and eager to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is advocating that revisions to canon law will enable the implementation of the strict approach worldwide.

They have spoken with experts and compiled materials that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He seemed engaged in reviewing it," Hickey remarked.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recent Vatican-commissioned report highlighted the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or dismissal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of abuse or negligence."

The report also pointed out that victims repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for church leaders and major superiors to be made responsible for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

The representative revealed they informed the pontiff at the beginning of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to participate in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey voiced hope for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, coming together and building a relationship and continuing to strengthen that relationship is a move in the right direction," they stated.

Hickey concluded that they shared with the pontiff: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can alter how the narrative ends - he appreciated that."
