Pat Cummins Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
