Approximately 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Officers report they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they stated.
Police then discovered numerous other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the fluid was likely human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
A high-ranking political figure stated the attack made him stunned and had to be solved quickly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right attack in 2020," he stated on online, recalling the killing of nine people by a assailant focusing on residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
